LinuxDefender Live is a Linux Live-CD developed by BitDefender. Based on Knoppix 3.4, it gathers BitDefender safety tools. BitDefender is a company well-considered for its antivirus products.

Built on a Linux Debian (Knoppix), BitDefender Live is a distribution directly bootable on CD and doesn’t need installation. Based on Linux Kernel 2.6, it is easy to remotely administrate [1] and offers many tools:

BitDefender antivirus which automatically auto update itself from live CD start,
BitDefender Proxy SMTP [2]
system utilities [3]
network utilities [4]

These tools allow several uses:

first of all, we get a complete and automatically updated antivirus tool. If it’s true that Linux systems aren’t viruses weak, this live-CD can be useful, when using a computer [5] definetelly crowded with viruses: we can boot on this CD and clean out the Windows partitions of any potential viruses [6] as Linux 2.6 kernel allows full access to NTFS partitions, BitDefender can remove viruses which contaminates an MS Windows operating system [7].

we can also setup an ordinary computer as a mail server, thanks to SMTP proxy, a file central save server, but also mirror a complete MS Windows system on a second hard disk, or do network audits...

Finally we must point out that BitDefender Live distribution is a complete Linux system, with graphic environment [8], OpenOffice.org, Konqueror and Mozilla...

Thus dual boot installation is possible, to discover a fully usable Linux system and use a powerful antivirus tool for MS Windows system.

In conclusion, BitDefender live is a GNU/Linux distribution which includes "proprietary" softwares from BitDefender, therefor it cannot be classified as an open source distribution but only as freeware category.
